What is Cross Eights?

Cross Eights is a small number grid where every row and every column must sum to exactly 8. Allowed values are a short integer list. Each cell sits in two sums, so one greedy 5 can break a column you had already solved.

It is constraint arithmetic, not a crossword and not a 2048 slide.

Cross Eights Game Rules

Place permitted numbers so each row totals 8 and each column totals 8. Going over 8 invalidates that line. Shared cells couple the two directions. Puzzles vary in size and in which integers are legal. Undo when a line overshoots.

  • Every Cross Eights row and column sums to 8.
  • Only the puzzle’s allowed integers may be placed.
  • Each cell belongs to one row and one column.
  • Overfilling a line is illegal and must be repaired.

How to play Cross Eights?

Press Play on this listing to open official Cross Eights. Fill near-complete lines first, then use the leftover as the only legal number that still makes 8.

  1. Note the grid size and which numbers Cross Eights allows.
  2. Complete a row or column that has little slack.
  3. Check the crossing line still can sum to 8.
  4. Repair any overflow before you fill more cells.

Cross Eights Strategy & Tips

Work the tightest sums first. If a row already shows 6, only 2 remains. Track both axes after every placement. Large allowed digits are dangerous early. If stuck, undo the last shared cell rather than forcing a 3 into a full column.

  • Solve Cross Eights lines with the least remaining slack first.
  • Always recheck the crossing sum.
  • Undo a shared cell instead of breaking a finished 8.
