What is Spelling Bee?

Spelling Bee is The New York Times’ daily honeycomb: seven letters, one required center, and a hunt for every valid word you can build. There is no color grid and no single secret answer. You submit as many real words as you can, all of which must include the center letter. Length, pangrams, and a rank ladder from Beginner toward Genius and Queen Bee are the score.

This is not Spellie (a kid Wordle with Easy/Medium/Hard), not SpellTower (clear connected tiles on a tower), and not Spellcheck (hear a word, type the spelling). Spelling Bee is a vocabulary grind on a tiny alphabet, hosted on the NYT puzzles site.

Spelling Bee Game Rules

Seven letters sit in a hive. Every accepted word must use the center letter. Letters may repeat. Words must be at least four letters; shorter entries do not count. Proper nouns and abbreviations are out. A pangram that uses all seven letters in one word pays a large bonus. Ranks climb as points add up. The trap is thinking you are finished when the obvious four-letter words dry up—dozens can still hide in the same seven tiles.

  • Build words from the seven Spelling Bee letters; the center is mandatory.
  • Reuse letters freely; skip anything under four letters.
  • Real dictionary words only; no names or abbreviations.
  • Pangrams and higher ranks (Genius, Queen Bee) are the stretch goals.

How to play Spelling Bee?

Press Play on this listing to open official Spelling Bee. Milk easy center-letter words first, then hunt longer stems, repeats, and the pangram.

  1. Read the seven letters and lock the center in your head.
  2. Enter obvious four-letter words that include the center.
  3. Stretch into longer combinations, prefixes, suffixes, and doubled letters.
  4. Chase a pangram, then grind remaining words until you hit your rank goal.

Spelling Bee Strategy & Tips

Treat the center as an anchor, not a decoration: if a stem cannot include it, skip it. Rotate prefixes and endings (-ing, -er, -less) around the same consonants. Hunt the pangram early; it maps which letters actually cooperate. When the board goes quiet, walk away—fresh eyes find the obscure leftovers. Spelling Bee rewards persistence more than speed.

  • Build every Spelling Bee word around the center letter.
  • Look for pangrams before you stall on four-letter crumbs.
  • Take a break when the hive stops giving; return later.
