What is Read the Tape?

Read the Tape is a daily higher-or-lower desk: five anonymous S&P 500 charts, no tickers, no dates, no headlines. Prices are normalized so the visible series starts at 100. For each chart you call whether the close five trading days after the last visible bar is up or down, size a paper wager from a virtual $10,000 pool, and then see the hidden future.

The Monkey Index—eleven virtual monkeys making random low-confidence calls—is a luck benchmark, not the scoring judge of your direction.

Read the Tape Game Rules

Study the blind daily tape. Optional overlays (RSI, moving averages, volume) are allowed. Set Low, Medium, or High conviction to size the paper bet, then tap up or down. Identity and the five-day path reveal after the call. No real money. High conviction does not make a guess truer; it only makes a miss more expensive on paper.

  • Call up or down on five blind Read the Tape charts.
  • Horizon is five trading days after the last visible bar.
  • Conviction sizes a paper wager; no real cash.
  • Compare paper results with the Monkey Index.

How to play Read the Tape?

Press Play on this listing to open official Read the Tape. Read structure first (trend, support, failed breakouts), then set conviction, then pick a direction. Repeat for all five charts.

  1. Inspect the anonymous Read the Tape series.
  2. Use indicators only as supporting evidence.
  3. Choose conviction, then up or down.
  4. Review distance, paper P/L, and the Monkey Index.

Read the Tape Strategy & Tips

A pretty last candle is not a thesis. Match conviction to conflict: Low when trend and oscillator disagree; High only when several independent clues point the same way. Indicators cannot see the unseen earnings print outside the window. Ugly selloffs rebound; clean breakouts fail. Read the Tape is a humility drill with a share card.

  • Score Read the Tape on structure, not the last bar.
  • Save High conviction for aligned clues.
  • Treat the monkeys as a random floor, not a teacher.
