What is matle?
matle is a daily chess deduction game. You are dropped into a real checkmate from an actual game, except five squares are hidden. You do not play the winning move. You reconstruct what belongs on those squares: white pieces, black pieces, pawns, or empty.
Keep the name lowercase: matle. It is not a speed-chess tactic trainer. Illegal boards and non-mates are rejected, so every submitted reconstruction must still be a legal checkmate.
matle Game Rules
Five squares are masked on a genuine mate position. Fill them. Feedback is Wordle-colored per square: green is the right piece on that square, yellow is a piece that belongs on a different hidden square, gray is a piece that is not in the solution. Empty can be the correct answer for a square. Random pretty positions fail; matle only accepts boards that remain legal mates.
- Rebuild five hidden squares on matle’s real checkmate.
- Green is correct piece and square; yellow is right piece, wrong square; gray is absent.
- Hidden squares may hold pieces or emptiness.
- Submitted boards must still be legal checkmates.
How to play matle?
Press Play on this listing to open official matle. Scan king flight squares and the visible mating net before you drop a rook on the first empty-looking tile.
- List every escape square the mated king still has on matle.
- Place a candidate piece that would close one hole, plus any empty squares you believe.
- Lock greens, relocate yellows, and drop grays.
- Resubmit until all five hidden squares match the mate.
matle Strategy & Tips
Think backward from the mate, not forward from an opening. Empty squares are often the hardest matle answers because they feel like missing attackers. If your idea leaves a flight square or is not mate, the whole structure is wrong. Yellow pieces still belong somewhere in the five; scramble them before inventing a new tactical story.
- Close king escapes first on matle.
- Treat empty as a real candidate, not a leftover.
- Reject any reconstruction that is not mate.

How do you play matle?
Open official matle, fill the hidden squares with pieces or empty, and keep adjusting until the board is the legal mate.
Do I find the checkmate move in matle?
