What is Close Hue?
Close Hue is a daily color-memory test. You get five color names (Goldenrod, Glaucous, and worse) and must rebuild each shade with hue, saturation, and brightness. The true color stays hidden until you submit. Each round scores 0–100 by perceptual distance; the day totals 500.
Unlimited practice and multiplayer rooms reuse the same five names for a lobby. A guess that “feels right” can still sit in the orange band because saturation drifted.
Close Hue Game Rules
Five shared daily names. For each: adjust H, S, B, submit, see the target, take 0–100 points. Bands: roughly 90–100 green, 70–89 yellow, 40–69 orange, 0–39 black. Submit locks that round. Sum is out of 500. The picker is HSB, not a named swatch list.
- Five Close Hue rounds, same names worldwide.
- Build the shade with hue, saturation, and brightness.
- 0–100 per color, 500 for the day.
- Submit is final for that name.
How to play Close Hue?

- Read the color name and any linguistic brightness clues.
- Set hue to the right family on the Close Hue wheel.
- Tune saturation and brightness, then submit.
- Compare to the reveal and repeat for the remaining four.
Close Hue Strategy & Tips
Hue family first; fine brightness last. Words like dusty, electric, midnight are S/B hints. For obscure names, ask whether the preview could honestly wear that word. Unlimited mode is for calibration. Multiplayer is the same five paints, different eyes.
- Fix hue before you obsess over Close Hue brightness.
- Parse the name for saturation language.
- Do not submit until the preview matches the word, not a default blue.
